One busy season story

When I was a senior associate, I remember a six month long busy season that happened in my public accounting career. I’m probably the lucky one and many of you lived or currently live through yet another lengthy and horrendous busy season.

No matter how short or long it is, a busy season takes all of your time and can impact you not only physically but emotionally.

It can be difficult to avoid this burnout which is a state of physical and emotional exhaustion.

When I finally felt like I couldn’t take it anymore, I made a radical move. I simply said that my schedule had to change. I didn’t threat with quitting. Frankly, nobody will be holding you back if you do. Instead, I contemplated changing practices. The result was a significant change in my schedule (for the better) and I didn’t end up having to switch practices.

It worked in my particular case when I was on the brink of not being able to continue on in a busy season mode.

Find a solution that will work in your situation. Especially, if you have plans on staying in public accounting for awhile. Think creatively! I know it’s very difficult to do but you have to do it to stay sane and to succeed in the long run.
